Xanthelasma Palpebrarum

Xanthelasma Palpebrarum are yellowish cholesterol deposits under the skin usually on or around the eyelids. They are indicative of lipid metabolsim disorders (e.g. Hyperlipidaemia)

They can range in size from very small up to 1 inch in diameter.

Because lipids are insoluble in water they combine with proteins to form compounds called lipoproteins. These transport lipids and cholesterol in the blood to different parts of the body. Changes to these lipoproteins, either as a result of genetics or an illness such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, can cause excess lipids and lipoproteins in the body which can then cause xanthelasma blemishes.

Treatment with diathermy can visibly reduce the raised appearance and reduce the colour, although subsequent treatments may be necessary and some colour may remain.

It is essential to see a GP prior to a consultation to seek the appropriate blood tests and other necessary medical checks to determine the cause of the deposits as treating any underlying causes will prevent further occurrence of xanthelasma blemishes.
